Summary

A moving, poignant, compelling YA debut, as a 15-year-old boy struggles to understand his best friend's suicide through the list of songs he leaves behind。

Here's what Sam knows: There was a party。 There was a fight。 The next morning, his best friend, Hayden, was dead。 And all he left Sam was a playlist of songs, and a suicide note: For Sam - listen and you'll understand。

As he listens to song after song, Sam tries to face up to what happened the night Hayden killed himself。 But it's only by taking out his earbuds and opening his eyes to the people around him that he will finally be able to piece together his best friend's story。 And maybe have a chance to change his own。

Part mystery, part love story, and part coming-of-age tale in the vein of Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Playlist for the Dead is an honest and gut-wrenching first novel about loss, rage, what it feels like to outgrow a friendship that's always defined you - and the struggle to redefine yourself。

i got this book on a used bookshop and after seeing the rating here on goodreads i wasn't expecting much from it but it was a nice read, still, i believe it could've been executed better and some aspects about the story could've had more meaning and be more interesting overall。this book gave life is strange meets the perks of being of a wallflower vibes honestly, so i think it is a game i would've love in 6th grade and it would've been one of my favorite books for sure。sam started to throw me of i got this book on a used bookshop and after seeing the rating here on goodreads i wasn't expecting much from it but it was a nice read, still, i believe it could've been executed better and some aspects about the story could've had more meaning and be more interesting overall。this book gave life is strange meets the perks of being of a wallflower vibes honestly, so i think it is a game i would've love in 6th grade and it would've been one of my favorite books for sure。sam started to throw me off when in chapter seven he says some girls tend to do self harm as an attention grab to him :/ like bro? i honestly couldn't like him very much since and the fact he just couldn't respect hayden for wanting to keep somethings to himself (which i identified with a lot)。 and also his comment still in chapter 7 about rachel's makeup and how if she and their mom shared half of what rachel put on they'd both look great? my guy just shut up。 i understand he's a hipster and stuff but like。。。on the other hand when archmage said "one down, two to go。" i got pretty excited about it, i honestly thought it would be sam himself sending those to himself and i honestly would've been more interesting than being astrid doing that。this girl is something else, for example when sam caught sabotaging ryan's truck and she kept saying "i thought you'd understand", who does she think she is to do all of that? not that i would've supported it but i would understand it if it had been same doing that。overall i still enjoyed the book and i still don't think it is that bad despite the characters being the weird hipster way that they are。 。。。more

My boyfriend bought me the hard bound of this novel because I badly want to read it and it was a very impulsive decision。 I did not even dare to look it up online first。 It did not manage ny expectations and I found it very boring and pointless。 However, I will be giving 2 stars because of the playlist。 The songs chosen for each chapter were undeniably miserable and depressing。 It matched the whole mood of the book。

was pretty iffy about the book cos of its theme, thought it was going to take a supernatural turn。 kinda dont like how there was a redemption arc of sorts for everyone in the book。 sam overreacted in my opinion but i wouldnt know how i would react if i were in his position。 the book got boring towards the end but with tweaks, and a modified plot it would be better

Marjorie Solis

I got bored on the half part but as I progress till the end it was really heart warming and have a very good portray on what family and teens are dealing today。 I cried at the end too, it was very good。

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book。 The twists in the book were very good and surprising and I really enjoyed the characters。 5/5!

A little juvenile but maybe that's the point。 The things that feel (and therefore are) huge and earth shattering when you're 15 look and feel smaller in the rearview, if you stick around。 Part "it gets better", part mixtape, part Gossip Girl, this story was ok。 If you're depressed, keep going。 A little juvenile but maybe that's the point。 The things that feel (and therefore are) huge and earth shattering when you're 15 look and feel smaller in the rearview, if you stick around。 Part "it gets better", part mixtape, part Gossip Girl, this story was ok。 If you're depressed, keep going。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I see Hayden's playlist helped Sam to know all the reasons that lead to this by giving him hints of the people he should talk to to know the whole story, and as a playlist, it helped Sam listen to these storys。At the end of the book I'm glad that Sam has partly moved on and he could go on with his life。 I can't imagine losing a friend specially by suicide。 This book showed how it could be hard to be the one who lift behind, all that throughing blames processes and blaming yourself and revenge 。 I see Hayden's playlist helped Sam to know all the reasons that lead to this by giving him hints of the people he should talk to to know the whole story, and as a playlist, it helped Sam listen to these storys。At the end of the book I'm glad that Sam has partly moved on and he could go on with his life。 I can't imagine losing a friend specially by suicide。 This book showed how it could be hard to be the one who lift behind, all that throughing blames processes and blaming yourself and revenge 。 I know it's even harder for the other side, but you should never give up hope, there's always hope waiting for you or around you, you just should keep going with life and at some place you'll how was it all worth it。I gave it 3 stars because it contains some drama that I didn't really like and I didn't sense a lot of suspense and I don't think the expressions were that good, I think I would have liked it if I was 2 or 3 years younger。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I love the messages that intended for people who lost their loved one because of suicide。 This book is more to show how Sam grieving。 As a debut novel, it was okay。 Tbh I kinda expect more? I expect Sam will discover each secret behind his best friend’s death, but nope。 lowkey disappointed because i was expecting that。 The songs are good too, it has a great idea and title, it just isn’t escalated that well。

3。5 stars。 While I did not like most of the music。 I liked checking the songs out as I read。 Kept my interest, but。 。 。 Suicide, dealing with the aftermath, bullying, parental expectations。 。 。

It was good at the start but then it kind of felt dragging。 Towards the end it was actually getting good which was nice。 It openly talks about grief and how people talk and feel about being left with what happened。 The playlist didnt really coincide with the story but it was still good。

Honestly, I was waiting for a good plot twist to keep me hooked and it didn't come。 rating this 1。5 stars because I don't think it was worth my time。 The synopsis at the back of the book itself seems very interesting, but once you've finished the book it was lacking a lot of things。 Honestly, I was waiting for a good plot twist to keep me hooked and it didn't come。 rating this 1。5 stars because I don't think it was worth my time。 The synopsis at the back of the book itself seems very interesting, but once you've finished the book it was lacking a lot of things。 。。。more

i expected a little more from this book, it started off great with an air of mystery。 but once i got past the half way point, everything became super predictable and it bummed me out that i was right, cause it just dragged on for so long。 even the reveal was anticlimactic。 in my opinion there were better ways this could’ve gone。 it was still an easy breezy read and a good inbetweener

I thought this was a solid read, it was a nice easy YA read that was interesting and different。 I actually really enjoyed the ending, most books tend to try and wrap up everything in a happy bow at the end even when it doesnt always apply。 I like the openness of this ending and how realistic it was。 Overall, a good story about two friends and finding a way through grief

Kinda bittersweet。 There were moments that made me chuckle and some that got me sad。 You could say that the ending went with an optimistic note, no heavy stuff especially with how the story started。 So I think it is pretty decent! Though it took me awhile to really start reading hahaha I only got into it when I reached the middle。

Dara

2。5 just not a very good book。 I wanted the author to tie everything up at the end, which he did。 Just very, very poorly。
